COMPANY AUDITION

AUDITION CRITERIA

Academy students selected for the Company by process of audition will be sufficiently trained and prepared to represent Classical Ballet of Mobile, not only as we perform, but in our community outreach throughout the Gulf Coast Region.

Audition Fee: $40 - Registration Links attached below, per age group

AUDITION TIMES (by Age):

GROUP 1 (Ages 8-10): 3:45-4:30 p.m.

Requirements:

  • 1-2 years of ballet training

  • Must be 8 by September 1, 2026

GROUP 2 (Ages 10-12): 4:15-5:45 p.m.

Requirements:

  • At least 2 years of ballet training

  • Must be 10 by September 1, 2026

GROUP 3 (Ages 13+): 5:30-7:00 p.m.

Requirements:

  • At least 2 years of ballet training

  • Must be 13 by September 1, 2026

ATTIRE:

All dancers must arrive wearing a cover-up 30 minutes prior to their scheduled audition time, dressed and ready  to dance (except for a change of shoes).

Girls —

  • Black leotard, pink or tan convertible tights

  • Hair in a secure ballet bun

  • Light stage makeup

  • No skirt

  • Small dance bag with ballet slippers and pointe shoes

  • No jewelry except small earrings

Boys —

  • Black dance pants or men’s tights

  • White fitted t-shirt

  • White ankle socks

  • White ballet slippers

REQUIREMENTS & GUIDELINES:

  • Please register prior to the day of the audition.

  • Submit a photo via email before the in-person audition:

    • Ages 8–10: first position

    • Ages 11+: first arabesque

  • Enrollment with Classical Ballet of Mobile is not required to audition.

  • Audition results will be emailed within 7 days or less.

  • Please notify CBM of any recent injury or illness.

  • Do not attend the audition if you are injured or ill.

  • If needed, you may petition to schedule a private audition.

Note: This is a closed audition — no observers permitted.

EVALUATION & CRITERIA:

  • All students auditioning must be the required age by September 1, 2026.

  • If you are recovering from an injury or are sick, please email us ahead of the audition so we can try to make other arrangements.

Petite Level (Ages 8–10)

  • Understanding of basic ballet positions (arms and feet)

  • Beginning knowledge of simple French terminology

  • Ability to follow class structure and teacher direction

  • Developing posture and body alignment

  • Coordination of arms and legs

  • Basic musicality and ability to move with the music

  • Ability to remember short, simple combinations

  • Joyful participation and willingness to learn

Trainee Level (Pre-Teen/Teen, Not on Pointe)

  • Strong understanding of basic ballet positions and terminology

  • Consistent posture and body placement on flat

  • Developing strength, turnout, and control

  • Flexibility appropriate for level with continued progress

  • Clear musicality and timing

  • Ability to retain and execute longer combinations

  • Beginning artistry and expressive quality

  • Focus, discipline, and readiness for more advanced training

  • Preparation for pre-pointe work (for girls)

Apprentice Level —

  • At least one year of pre-pointe (for girls)

  • Knowledge of basic ballet positions and terminology

  • Strong posture and body placement on flat

  • Flexibility combined with strength and control

  • Musicality

  • Ability to quickly learn combinations

  • Graceful, expressive presentation

Junior Level —

  • At least one year of introductory pointe work (for girls)

  • Knowledge of basic ballet positions and terminology

  • Strong posture and body placement on flat and en pointe

  • Flexibility combined with strength and control

  • Musicality

  • Ability to quickly learn combinations

  • Graceful, expressive presentation

Senior Level —

  • At least two years en pointe (for girls)

  • Greater strength, mastery and artistry

  • Technical control in barre and center work

  • Pirouettes en dehors and en dedans from fourth and fifth

  • Strong petite and grand allegro

  • Leadership and maturity in class and rehearsal

ENTRANCE INTO THE COMPANY will be by audition or, in exceptional cases, by invitation only.

  • All members from the previous season are required to
    re-audition annually as part of our commitment to continued growth, consistency, and maintaining the highest standards within the company.

  • Dancers must train at CBM year round.

  • By invitation only (Outside students must take at least 2 CBM classes per week.)

YEARLY COMPANY DUES: $250

REHEARSALS: Rehearsals take place outside of regular class hours on designated Company days.
